Right in front of Porta San Niccolò, which opens onto the road for Fort Belvedere and Piazzale Michelangelo, the Antica Mescita still looks like an ancient hostelry thanks to its wooden tables, chairs and stools, together with the flasks and bottles of wine and period photos on the walls. Once a Chianti wine Customs office, it was transformed into a grocers and tavern selling wine in the early 19th century. The crypt of the Church of San Niccolò, dating back the year 1000, was discovered in the cellars after the flood of 1966. Now completely restored, it is now an integral part of the restaurant and a fine example of Florentine Romanesque architecture. The Tuscan cuisine is still a high-point in this restaurant, run since 1993 by the Prosperi family, and includes such recipes as Ribollita (vegetable bread soup), Pappa al pomodoro (tomato bread soup), purèed chick peas with Boletus mushrooms, Florentine tripe, herb-flavoured wild boar stew, herb-flavoured sliced steak, rabbit “drunk” on Vernaccia accompanied by beans “all’uccelletto” (tomato and sage) or country-style potatoes, still prepared from the original Florentine recipes, with great care taken to use seasonal products. Buffet lunches from the huge table in the first dining room based on typical Tuscan specialities. Outside dining possible.
